How do I select the best home theater system?

July 172010

My boyfriend just bought a plasma TV and I’d like to buy him an home theater system but I don’t have a clue where to begin. I’ve been trying to research online but it seems like there’s so many details to figure out – how many watts do I need, do I need a new DVD player with it, do I want to buy it piece by piece or HTIB? Ahhh. I’d like to spend somewhere around $200, max $300 but I don’t know if this is realistic for a good system and don’t want to get him a cruddy one just for the sake of getting one. I know he’s really interested in the ones that have a rear wireless speaker – and I don’t know too much more than that. Anyone knowledgeable out there with some good recommendations, a place I should begin my research or willing to have some dialouge with me about the best systems and what I should look for? I think I’ll eventually go to CC or BB but I’d like to be armed with some info first. Thanks ahead of time for your help!

How come home theater receivers only seem to go up to 110 watts per channel total and not ever higher?

July 142010

I occassionally gander at home theater receivers now and then for the past three or four years and every time I look each one has no more than 110watts per channel output (a lot even have less than 100). How come they don’t ever go up to say 200watts per channel or something? Or have some type of home theater amplifier? Wondering if anybody has any input and it would be greatly appreciated.

Normally home theater systems support high channel audio. Say 6 channel Dolby or better. So 110w/channel is quite high (660W right there). Now the receiver has to have pre-amp, possibly radio receiver, and equilizer functions. These are low power applications that are highly susceptible to noise on the power rails and EM noise generated from nearby high power circuits. To properly shield the low power functions, supply power to all the functions, and then properly COOL the whole system down is a large engineering effort. People will not pay the $$ for the increased complexity that providing huge power support will cause to the whole system.
For high power applications, you are much better off (quality/$) to go to individual components and purchase a pre-amp, with a high power amp.
You could purchase a good quality low power theater receiver, then use the pre-amp outputs to amplifiers that support the type of power you are looking for. This will give you great quality high power output, at an audio quality dependant on the pre-amp (theater system) you choose.

How can I hook up a home theater system to work with the regular tv?

July 112010

I have an LG 42PG20 Plasma tv and an LG LHT854 home theater system. I do not use a cable box to receive my cable. I get the sound ok when I watch DVDs but not when watching TV. I do have the HDMI cables but what am I missing? Any help would be great.
Thanks!

sounds like you need a cable, plasma tv audio out to home theater audio in. it should be a three prong audio cable red, white, yellow or maybe the hdmi audio cable to the home theater box. let me guess you forgot to check before you bought it. OK; GET A PENSIL, AM ONLY GOING TO SAY THIS ONCE. check what you buy to make sure its compatible by this I mean the jacks are the same on both the tv and the home sys. Always get a tv with an ear phone jack, it can be used as an external audio jack to your home system. and make sure the sales person didn’t switch it to a different model before you pay for it. got it… home systems do not always come with all the right cables you need. so you may need to go to the store and get a cable that you do not seem to have now.

what is good to use for home theater sound deadening?

July 82010

My family is thinking about moving into a new house with an unfinised basement, but we plan on finishing it. We want to make it partially a home theater type room, with a nice sound system. What would be some good ideas for insulating the ceiling or something so the bass doesn’t rattle the whole house?

Room acoustics is a bit of a black art. You seal off the sheatrock to prevent high-frequency from leaking out. But you need WEIGHT to keep the bass in the room.

This can involve putting spacers and a second layer of sheetrock, Dow Corning has special fiberglass and special sheat rock for sound deadening, etc.

Saddly – I dont know of a good book to recommend. You may have to consult a acoustics expert on what to use.

I am looking for a new home theater receiver with certain features. Can someone recommend one for me?

July 52010

I am looking to replace an old Sony home theater receiver. I am looking for one with these certain features: 4 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI output, at least 4 optical inputs, video upconversion. Can someone please recommend a good brand and model that would fit these criteria? I am also looking for a good price (of course).

Thank you for your help.

The Yamaha RX-V1800 would be the cheapest one that I can find that is a good quality brand receiver with the connections you require. Also it upconverts any video sourse (composite, s-video, component) to 1080p and decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Lossless audio. I think it goes for about $1,299.95.

http://lockergnome.net – http://twitter.com/chrispirillo – http://facebook.com/chrispirillo – Kevin called in the other night and wanted advice on setting up a home theater. The friend of his who is trying to set things up is wondering if an Xbox 360 is sufficient as a starting point. He also already owns a 1080p television. Have you ever set up a home theater? Could a home security system interfere with my home theater system?

July 32010

I recently installed a wireless home security systems (ADT), and now I am noticing a clicking emanating from my home theater system. I am wondering if it is caused by the new security, and if so, how can I fix it?

A bit of detail on the clicking: it is similar to, but not the same as, the phone interference caused by certain (GSM) phones.

This is one of the many reasons I stay away from Wireless Security Systems. The thing is, the industry is well aware of the problems wireless security systems cause. Unfortuntately the ease of installation and quick monitoring revenues tends to win out over providing a decent system.

I’m not going to profess to being an expert in home theatre, I don’t know where the interference is entering the system. If you have RF audio or video transmission I could see that as the culprit. As for changing the frequency, I don’t know if this can be done but if so, that might just fix your problem.

Another solution would be to block RF out of the media room, although costly, metal walls might do the trick.

Honestly, I would suggest you contact the company who sold you the system. If you are positive the alarm system is causing the problem, they can test it out by powering the ENTIRE system down. This includes the wireless door contacts, motion sensor and anything else that would be sending that pulse. If the problem goes away, tell them to make the system go away. Opt for a hardwired security system. Yes there is more work involved in the installation, but the quality is better.
