For a home theater in my basement, should I place sconce lighting on either side of my projector screen?

June 302010

I’m setting up a home theater in my basement (just finished framing). I plan to put 2 sconces on both side walls. But I was wondering if I should put a sconce on each side of the projector screen itself? Is having some dimmed light next to the screen good for viewing or is it better to keep the screen area as dark as possible?

Thanks – Sam.

It can wash out the image depending how close and bright they are. Ideally you need a dark room. It depends on the projector and screen though. Try a lamp to test it first. Good luck.

Who can set up a home theater system for cheap?

June 282010

I bought this sony 5.1 home theater system from circuit city. I want to install the speakers within the walls, but firedog is very expensive. Are there any other local people who can install a home theater system for cheap?

Depends on where you live and looking for someone to do so. If you are just looking to run the speaker wires in the walls it very simple and easy to do. From tucking them into the rug to a little more work of fishing them threw the wall. I would recommend just removing molding on the ground and putting them in there then putting the molding back up. You will have to cut into the wall but it is very easy to do.

Ozzie’s Home Theater

June 252010

Finally finished building my home theater! It took longer than I thought but was well worth it. This is an 110″ screen with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. I am using a JVC RS2 HD Projector with B&W speakers, Lexicon Pre-amp and Bryston amps. I added the riser in the second row for stadium seating. This room brings many hours of enjoyment. I know that when I was building my Home Theater I looked for as many others that I could find for ideas. So, I am adding this one to the collection to help anybody else who wants to build one.

Where I can buy a home theater system with digital coaxial audio input?

June 252010

My cable box and my DVD player both have on the back a digital coaxial audio output. I’m looking for a home theater system with digital coaxial audio input. My friend already gave me the digital coaxial cable. I don’t want a home theater with only left (white) and right (red) inputs. Thanks!

99.9% of all receivers will have 1 coaxial or more input. Get an Onkyo. They offer fantastic performance for a great price. You can check specs on their website: http://www.onkyousa.com/
They feature component receivers and component receiver + speaker packages. I’d recommend the TXSR-507 — it features HD audio via HDMI for blu-ray movies (sounds amazing if you have high quality speakers AND it has 2 coax inputs for you to hook up cable and DVD boxes.

Just as a reminder, red/white analog inputs can handle surround sound just fine, you just need 5 red/white-pair cables to connect it!! I prefer HDMI or, if I don’t have the option, Digital Optical (Toslink) is solid.

All the walls and the ceiling are isolated using products from http://www.pac-intl.com The front stage is completely filled with sand and I use a Biometric Fingerprint Door Lock for access to the Theater.

What are some really good headphones for home theater and Xbox?

June 192010

I want some really good headphones in the <$150 range for my home theater. I come home from work late at night and don’t want to wake up my wife and daughter, but still want to enjoy a movie or some Xbox.

Obviously I’d go buy the Sennheiser HD 650s if I wanted to flip out 1/2 a grand, but that’s not possible.

Anybody have any good suggestions?

5.1 sound and good bass are important!

Thanks friends!

bose has one of the best headphones in my opinion. i have their speakers in my audi and theyre amazingggg. just a great brand all around. they can get kind of pricey but im pretty sure i saw some at best buy for around 100.

Are there any good wireless home theater surround systems out there?

June 162010

I am trying to reduce clutter and i am trying to find a home theater system that has rear wireless speakers so I dont have to run my speaker wire across the floor to the rear speakers. Anybody own any good wireless home theater systems that work well for them. Thanks for all reply’s.

There are some good ones but they are very expensive, some of the best and least expensive are made by Rockfish and Bose, the better systems are sold separate from the speakers and then you can use your own speakers, but 35 watts would be a lot of power for a wireless system so you need to choose speakers that are efficient.
