What’s the difference between single coil and dual coil subwoofers?

June 252010

i was looking up subwoofers to get for my car and i came across this question. i’ve only noticed that the dual coils are more expensive. is it worth the price difference?

You have more options when you have a dual voice coil. You can still change the impedance of single coil speakers, but it is really not a good idea. You are basically getting more power out of the dual voice coil and more wiring options. Also, you can mono block the duals and you shouldn’t do that with single…Good luck.

How can I find out if my radio input to my subwoofers is working?

June 222010

I recently installed subwoofers in my truck but can’t get them to play off of my radio. I can plug an ipod to the amp and the Subwoofers will play off of the ipod. But if I connect the rca jacks from my amp to the radio deck input, the subwoofers wont play. Need help please.

Side Note: My radio works, just need help with the input and output

Connecting the amp inputs to a radio deck input won’t work. You have to connect a preamp OUTPUT from the radio deck to the amp inputs.

Most aftermarket head units include at least one set of RCA preamp outputs. Stock receivers don’t usually have preamp outputs. The solution is to "tap" the speaker outputs (most often rear speakers) and connect them to a line output converter (LOC) and use RCA cables from the LOC to your amp inputs.

Here’s an excellent 2-channel LOC with amp remote turn-on:

Is it ok to have two subwoofers near eachother?

June 192010

My pc and tv are near eachother. I have a 2.1 speaker set hooked up to my pc. I want to get a surround sound for my tv. Is it ok to put two subwoofers near eachother? Will they de-magnitize each other or something? Should I never have them both on at the same time or something? Does it not matter?

Historically it is not a problem, if you try to operate both at the same time you may (highly unlikely) experience signal interference. But the competing bass will probably have some phase cancellation issues.

expect them to play nice with one another.

Kicker Subwoofer

How does a capacitator for car subwoofers work?

June 162010

i have two 10′ subwoofers that are hooked up to a 1000 watt amp. if i buy a capacitator how exactly does it work and how do i install it and what do i need to install it

The purpose of a capacitor is to temporarily supply voltage to the electrical system when the alternator has a voltage drop. this tends to happen often when bass is amplified and sent to a subwoofer. The cap charges up to the same voltage as the alternator which will be 13-14 something volts depending on your alternator. Then when the kick drum hits and the voltage thatthe alternator supplies drops becuse it can’t handle that much of a load the capacitor takes over temporarily relieveing the electrical system, then recharging back up to the same voltage as the alternator.

thats how its supposed to work anyways. to install it all you need to do is run wire from it to the amp and battery. and fusing those connections are recommended

and subwoofers dont have capacitors that "bleed off" higher tones. the subwoofer is just a speaker that does what it is told to do. if a musical signal of 1000hz is sent to a subwoofer it will try to play it, and probably damage itself in the process. Low pass filters do this "bleeding off" that you are referring to. Low pass filters cut off all frequencies above a set frequency so that a subwoofer wont try to play it and get damaged. and those are usually on amplifiers, not subwoofers
